ORIGIN: US: California
TYPE/VARIETAL: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Semillon & Viognier
PRODUCT: Conundrum California White Wine
From the very first vintage they were determined to make a dramatically different white wine blend that would surpass the scope of single varietal wines.
After experimenting with 11 different white wine grapes, they chose the three they considered the key ingredients, the aromas and flavors that form the foundation of the wine: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and -- for its intriguing floral/tropical character -- Muscat Canelli. Then, from their "spice cabinet," they added small amounts of Sémillon and Viognier. Already, they were working with flavors and textures that formed a new and unprecedented combination -- a conundrum, or puzzle to be teased out by the taster.
Conundrum is owned by the Wagner family of Caymus Vineyards, but stands on its own as a separate brand. Charlie Wagner and Jon Bolta share responsibilities of the proprietary wine. In 2007 production expanded into a state-of-the art winery in Monterey County close to the sources of the most grape varietals that make up the wine.
